Enjoy The Exumas
Published in March 2019 by Don Anderson
After waiting for a few days in Nassau to let a storm pass, we motored out of the harbour and then raised our sails once clear of the port. Our "mighty" crew of three was delivering a brand new, twenty-seven-foot sailing sloop to her new owner in Puerto Rico by way of 850 ocean miles. The other two crew members had been strangers to me until we met just a few days prior to departure.
A decision needed to be made; either sail south through the Exuma islands of the Bahamas knowing they were fraught with the dangers of pirates in those years or turn our small vessel east and head out in to the Atlantic ocean. We chose the latter. This offshore route turned out to be very challenging for several days when an unexpected, heavy storm hit us hard. A sunny, Caribbean passage had been predicted.
Landfall in Puerto Rico was made after our ten-day voyage and I eventually crewed another vessel over to the Virgin Islands. My hair was brown back then.
Pirates no longer haunt any of the Bahamian islands. The Exumas have changed drastically since my time there. Now, they offer smooth, protected waters to visitors who decide to enjoy a cruise through the area. In today's financial and legacy planning world, Legato is the modern-day Exumas. Our safe, simple and predictable path can be an excellent complement to adventures out on the open ocean of the wonderfully bullish, yet potentially turbulent, investment markets.
It's better in the Bahamas. :-)
