Look Across
Published on December 20, 2016 by Don Anderson
“Nanna went to school there”, advised her Mother as they drove past a high school. The teenage daughter tried to connect the dots between the praise for the formerly powerful high school athlete versus the elderly grandmother she knew, who had recently passed away.

I’ll stop short of saying “we become our parents”. It's natural to slow down, lose flexibility and hopefully retire. In between now and then, life happens. Sports competitions, musical performances, travels to the sun, favorite traditions and celebrations consume our lives. What about planning for the future, and for change?

Students avoid most career counselors through their high school years. Few people have a professional coach during their career or really look ahead to plan how they’ll fund life in their twilight years, with or without a pension from an employer.

Everyone’s friend Ferris Bueller showed us how to enjoy living in his classic movie of 1986. Ferris planned extensively to make sure his heist would work under the watchful eye of suspicious principal Mr. Rooney. "Be Like Ferris" could be starting advice.

At a minimum, look across. Learn from parents, older friends and experienced colleagues to help achieve your goals. They can help make your future so bright, you'll need to wear shades.
