Short Trip

Posted on September 17, 2021 by Don Anderson
This past weekend, tennis fans witnessed remarkable history as Emma Radacanu won ten straight matches on her path to becoming champion at the US Open women's singles tennis championship. The first qualifier to win a tennis grand slam event, Emma achieved this accomplishment with power, athleticism, and sportsmanship.

Challenging Emma in the finals and sharing the spotlight equally, Canadian Leylah Fernandez won our hearts with her booming left-side forehands, big smile, and grace. Both still teenagers, Emma and Leylah dismantled the tournament seedings en route to taking home the winning silverware and generous prize monies.

Also present at the trophy ceremony was British Grand Slam champion Virginia Wade who compared Emma to some of the greats of the game after witnessing Emma's "impossible" US Open triumph. At 76 years old, Ms. Wade appeared to be in good health as she enjoyed the heavily contested match and closing ceremony.

Then this image came to my attention. Highlighting the contrast of young to old, these hands exemplify what we had all noticed at the prize ceremony; the contrast of the healthy, young athletes who had just competed in this 2021 US Open final against the elder appearance of the older athletes like Ms. Wade who had been invited back the stadium at which they had also been a champion decades ago.

Life is a short trip. Let's enjoy it! We never know when circumstances will change suddenly yet we do know that time progresses, and often faster than we think or would dare to admit.
